Common Shoulder and Arm Conditions

Rotator Cuff Injuries +
What it is: Tears, irritation, or inflammation of the muscles and tendons that help stabilize the shoulder. Common causes: Overhead sports, repetitive lifting, throwing, falls, aging, and sudden shoulder trauma. Symptoms: Shoulder pain, weakness, pain with overhead movement, limited range of motion, and nighttime discomfort. How we treat: We use Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Manual Physical Therapy, progressive strengthening, shoulder mobility work, and sport-specific return-to-activity progressions through Sports Rehabilitation. When appropriate, we may also use Dry Needling, Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization, IASTM, and Blood Flow Restriction Training to support pain relief, tissue recovery, and strength rebuilding.
Shoulder Impingement +
What it is: Compression or irritation of the rotator cuff tendons as the arm moves. Common causes: Poor posture, muscle imbalance, overhead activity, weakness, tightness, and repetitive reaching. Symptoms: Pain with raising the arm, pinching, weakness, and discomfort during sports, work, or daily tasks. How we treat: We focus on restoring shoulder mobility, improving posture, strengthening the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles, and correcting movement patterns through Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Manual Physical Therapy, and Sports Rehabilitation.
Labral Tears +
What it is: A tear in the cartilage rim that helps stabilize the shoulder socket. Common causes: Throwing sports, falls, dislocations, repetitive overhead motion, and trauma. Symptoms: Deep shoulder pain, clicking, catching, weakness, and a feeling of instability. How we treat: We provide conservative shoulder strengthening or Post Surgical Rehab when surgery is needed. Treatment may include Manual Physical Therapy, progressive strengthening, stability training, and return-to-throwing or return-to-sport progressions through Sports Rehabilitation.
Frozen Shoulder +
What it is: Stiffness and loss of shoulder motion caused by tightening of the shoulder capsule. Common causes: Immobilization, inflammation, injury, surgery, diabetes, and gradual onset without a clear cause. Symptoms: Shoulder stiffness, pain, difficulty reaching, and limited range of motion. How we treat: We use Manual Physical Therapy, joint mobilization, stretching, mobility restoration, and gradual strengthening through Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Our goal is to help patients regain motion, reduce pain, and return to daily activities with more confidence.
Biceps Tendinopathy +
What it is: Irritation of the biceps tendon near the front of the shoulder. Common causes: Overhead activity, lifting, throwing, repetitive reaching, and shoulder mechanics issues. Symptoms: Front shoulder pain, tenderness, weakness, and pain with lifting or reaching. How we treat: We use load management, strengthening, Manual Physical Therapy, Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization, and movement retraining through Orthopedic Physical Therapy. For athletes, we may include Sports Rehabilitation to rebuild strength and confidence before returning to play.
Work-Related Shoulder Strain +
What it is: Pain or irritation in the shoulder caused by repetitive reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, or overhead work. Common causes: Industrial work, repetitive job tasks, warehouse lifting, construction work, overhead labor, and awkward work positions. Symptoms: Shoulder pain, weakness, stiffness, pain with lifting, and difficulty completing job duties. How we treat: We use Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Manual Physical Therapy, progressive strengthening, posture and movement retraining, and job-specific activity progression. When soft tissue restriction or irritation is involved, we may also use Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization or IASTM to support better movement and recovery.
Youth Throwing Injuries +
What it is: Shoulder or arm pain that develops in young athletes from repetitive throwing or overhead sports. Common causes: Baseball, softball, volleyball, swimming, football, growth-related changes, and throwing too much too soon. Symptoms: Shoulder pain, arm fatigue, weakness, reduced throwing speed, soreness after practice, and difficulty returning to play. How we treat: We use Pediatric Therapy, Sports Rehabilitation, shoulder and core strengthening, mobility work, throwing mechanics support, and return-to-sport progressions designed for the athlete’s age, sport, and goals.

Tennis Elbow +
What it is: Irritation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow. Common causes: Racquet sports, repetitive gripping, lifting, computer work, and manual labor. Symptoms: Outer elbow pain, weak grip, pain with lifting, and tenderness near the elbow. How we treat: We use Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Manual Physical Therapy, eccentric strengthening, activity modification, grip retraining, and IASTM when appropriate to improve tissue tolerance and reduce pain.
Golfer’s Elbow +
What it is: Irritation of the tendons on the inside of the elbow. Common causes: Golf, throwing sports, repetitive wrist motion, gripping, and lifting. Symptoms: Inner elbow pain, weakness, tenderness, and pain with gripping or wrist movement. How we treat: We focus on progressive tendon loading, wrist and forearm strengthening, manual therapy, and sport-specific movement correction through Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
UCL Injury +
What it is: A sprain or tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. Common causes: Repetitive throwing, baseball, softball, overhead sports, and sudden stress to the elbow. Symptoms: Inner elbow pain, decreased throwing velocity, instability, and pain with throwing. How we treat: We provide conservative strengthening or Post Surgical Rehab, depending on the severity of the injury. Treatment may include shoulder, elbow, core, and lower-body strengthening, throwing mechanics support, and return-to-throwing progressions through Sports Rehabilitation.
Wrist Sprains +
What it is: Injury to the ligaments that support the wrist. Common causes: Falls, sports trauma, lifting injuries, and sudden twisting. Symptoms: Wrist pain, swelling, stiffness, weakness, and limited motion. How we treat: We use Orthopedic Physical Therapy, mobility work, strengthening, grip retraining, and functional progression to help patients safely return to daily activities, work, or sports.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome +
What it is: Compression or irritation of the median nerve at the wrist. Common causes: Repetitive hand use, prolonged wrist positions, pregnancy, diabetes, and work-related strain. Symptoms: Numbness, tingling, weakness, hand pain, and symptoms that may worsen at night. How we treat: We use nerve gliding, ergonomic education, wrist and hand strengthening, Manual Physical Therapy, and Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization to reduce irritation and improve function.
Work-Related Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Pain +
What it is: Pain or irritation in the hand, wrist, forearm, or elbow caused by repetitive work tasks or prolonged gripping. Common causes: Computer work, tool use, lifting, gripping, assembly line work, industrial labor, and repetitive wrist or hand motion. Symptoms: Wrist pain, elbow pain, hand weakness, numbness, tingling, grip difficulty, and pain with work tasks. Youth Elbow Overuse Injuries +
What it is: Elbow pain in young athletes caused by repetitive throwing, swinging, or weight-bearing through the arm. Common causes: Baseball, softball, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, and year-round sports participation. Symptoms: Inner or outer elbow pain, soreness after throwing, reduced performance, weakness, and pain with gripping or lifting. Disc Herniation +
What it is: Irritation, bulging, or rupture of a spinal disc that may affect nearby nerves. Common causes: Heavy lifting, twisting, trauma, repetitive strain, or degeneration. Symptoms: Back or neck pain, radiating pain into the arm or leg, numbness, tingling, and weakness. How we treat: We use Back Pain Treatment, spinal mobility work, stabilization exercises, nerve mobility, education, and progressive strengthening through Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
Sciatica +
What it is: Irritation of the sciatic nerve that causes pain down the leg. Common causes: Disc herniation, spinal stenosis, piriformis irritation, hip mobility limitations, or nerve sensitivity. Symptoms: Pain radiating down the leg, numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain with sitting or bending. How we treat: We use Back Pain Treatment, nerve mobility exercises, hip and core strengthening, movement retraining, and Manual Physical Therapy to reduce symptoms and restore function.
Spinal Stenosis +
What it is: Narrowing of the spinal canal that can place pressure on nerves. Common causes: Aging, arthritis, disc changes, and bone spurs. Symptoms: Back pain, leg pain, heaviness, numbness, and symptoms that may improve with bending forward. How we treat: We focus on mobility, strengthening, posture training, walking tolerance, balance, and functional movement through Back Pain Treatment, Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and Neuromuscular Rehabilitation when balance, coordination, or nerve-related movement control is affected.
SI Joint Dysfunction +
What it is: Pain or irritation around the sacroiliac joint where the spine and pelvis meet. Common causes: Pregnancy, trauma, lifting, muscle imbalance, and uneven loading through the hips or pelvis. Symptoms: Low back pain, buttock pain, pain with standing, and pain with transitions. How we treat: We use Manual Physical Therapy, pelvic stabilization, hip strengthening, core training, and movement correction through Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
Neck Pain and Whiplash +
What it is: Pain, stiffness, or soft tissue injury involving the cervical spine. Common causes: Car accidents, sports injuries, poor posture, falls, and prolonged desk work. Symptoms: Neck pain, stiffness, headaches, shoulder pain, limited motion, and muscle tightness. How we treat: We use Manual Physical Therapy, postural correction, mobility work, strengthening, and Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization. Work-Related Back and Neck Pain +
What it is: Back or neck pain caused by job demands, repetitive strain, poor posture, lifting, or prolonged positions. Common causes: Industrial work, desk work, driving, lifting, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, and repetitive work tasks. Symptoms: Low back pain, neck stiffness, muscle tightness, headaches, pain with lifting, and difficulty completing work duties. Hip Impingement +

Hip Bursitis +
What it is: Irritation of a fluid-filled sac near the outside of the hip. Common causes: Overuse, hip weakness, running mechanics, IT band tightness, and prolonged pressure on the hip. Symptoms: Outer hip pain, tenderness, pain when lying on the side, and pain with walking or stairs. How we treat: We use Orthopedic Physical Therapy, glute strengthening, gait correction, Manual Physical Therapy, and Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization to reduce irritation and improve hip control.
Groin Strains +
What it is: A strain or tear of the adductor muscles along the inner thigh. Common causes: Kicking, sprinting, cutting, sudden direction changes, and sports overload. Symptoms: Inner thigh pain, groin pain, weakness, and pain with running or cutting. How we treat: We use progressive strengthening, mobility work, core and hip control, and sport-specific return-to-play progressions through Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
Hip Osteoarthritis +
What it is: Wear or degeneration of the cartilage in the hip joint. Common causes: Aging, previous injury, joint stress, genetics, and long-term mobility limitations. Symptoms: Deep hip pain, groin pain, stiffness, difficulty walking, and reduced range of motion. How we treat: We use Orthopedic Physical Therapy, hip mobility, strengthening, gait training, activity modification, and Manual Physical Therapy to help patients move with less pain and more confidence.
Work-Related Hip Pain +
What it is: Hip pain caused by repetitive lifting, standing, walking, climbing, squatting, or job-related overuse. Common causes: Industrial work, prolonged standing, repetitive squatting, lifting, carrying, climbing ladders or stairs, and uneven work surfaces. Symptoms: Hip stiffness, groin pain, outer hip pain, weakness, difficulty walking, and pain with work tasks. What it is: Hip or groin pain in young athletes that may develop during growth, training, sprinting, kicking, or cutting sports. Common causes: Soccer, football, baseball, softball, dance, track, growth spurts, repetitive running, and sudden changes in training volume. Symptoms: Groin pain, hip stiffness, limping, pain with running or kicking, and reduced sports performance. How we treat: We use Pediatric Therapy, Sports Rehabilitation, hip mobility, core and glute strengthening, running mechanics, and gradual return-to-play progressions.

ACL Tears +
What it is: A tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. Common causes: Pivoting, cutting, jumping, landing, sudden direction changes, and contact sports. Symptoms: Popping sensation, swelling, instability, pain, and giving way. How we treat: We provide pre-surgical strengthening, conservative care, or Post Surgical Rehab. Treatment may include progressive strength work, Neuromuscular Rehabilitation, jumping and landing mechanics, return-to-sport testing, Blood Flow Restriction Training, and Sports Rehabilitation.
Meniscus Tears +
What it is: A tear in the cartilage that cushions the knee. Common causes: Twisting injuries, sports trauma, deep squatting, aging, and degeneration. Symptoms: Knee pain, swelling, clicking, catching, locking, and pain with bending or squatting. How we treat: We use conservative strengthening or Post Surgical Rehab, depending on the injury. Treatment may include mobility restoration, quad and hip strengthening, loading strategies, balance work, and return-to-activity progression through Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
Patellar Tendinopathy +
What it is: Irritation or degeneration of the tendon below the kneecap. Common causes: Jumping sports, running, rapid increases in training, and repetitive stress. Symptoms: Pain below the kneecap, pain with jumping, running, stairs, or squatting. How we treat: We use progressive tendon loading, strength training, movement correction, Blood Flow Restriction Training, and sport-specific progression through Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
Runner’s Knee +
What it is: Pain around or behind the kneecap, often related to kneecap tracking or movement mechanics. Common causes: Running, weak hips, muscle imbalance, training errors, and poor landing or squat mechanics. Symptoms: Pain with stairs, running, squatting, jumping, or sitting for long periods. How we treat: We use hip and quad strengthening, gait retraining, mobility work, Manual Physical Therapy, and movement correction through Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
IT Band Syndrome +
What it is: Irritation of the iliotibial band near the outside of the knee. Common causes: Running, cycling, hip weakness, training changes, and poor mechanics. Symptoms: Outer knee pain, pain during activity, and discomfort that may worsen with distance. How we treat: We focus on hip strengthening, gait correction, mobility, Manual Physical Therapy, and Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization through Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
MCL and LCL Sprains +
What it is: Injury to the ligaments on the inside or outside of the knee. Common causes: Contact sports, twisting injuries, falls, and sudden side-to-side stress. Symptoms: Side knee pain, swelling, tenderness, instability, and difficulty cutting or pivoting. How we treat: We use progressive strengthening, stability work, Neuromuscular Rehabilitation, movement retraining, and return-to-sport rehab through Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
Total Knee Replacement +
What it is: Surgical replacement of the knee joint, often due to severe arthritis or joint damage. Common causes: Advanced arthritis, chronic knee pain, joint degeneration, and loss of function. Symptoms: Pain, stiffness, swelling, limited walking tolerance, and difficulty with stairs or daily activity. How we treat: We provide Post Surgical Rehab focused on restoring range of motion, rebuilding strength, improving walking mechanics, reducing stiffness, and helping patients return to everyday activities safely.
Work-Related Knee Pain +
What it is: Knee pain caused by repetitive job demands such as kneeling, squatting, climbing, lifting, or prolonged standing. Common causes: Industrial work, warehouse work, construction, repetitive stairs, heavy lifting, kneeling, and long shifts on hard surfaces. Symptoms: Knee pain, swelling, stiffness, weakness, pain with stairs, and difficulty squatting or kneeling. Symptoms: Pain around the kneecap, pain below the kneecap, swelling, limping, pain with stairs, and difficulty running or jumping. Ankle Sprains +
What it is: Injury to the ligaments that support the ankle. Common causes: Rolling or twisting the ankle during sports, walking, running, or jumping. Symptoms: Pain, swelling, bruising, instability, and difficulty walking. How we treat: We use mobility restoration, strengthening, proprioception, Neuromuscular Rehabilitation, and return-to-sport progression through Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
Achilles Tendinopathy +
What it is: Irritation or degeneration of the Achilles tendon. Common causes: Running, jumping, tight calves, sudden increases in training, and repetitive stress. Symptoms: Pain and stiffness in the back of the ankle, especially with activity or first steps. How we treat: We use progressive loading, calf strengthening, mobility work, gait retraining, Manual Physical Therapy, and IASTM when appropriate through Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
Achilles Tendon Rupture +
What it is: A complete or partial tear of the Achilles tendon. Common causes: Explosive movements, sprinting, jumping, sudden push-off, and sports activity. Symptoms: Popping sensation, swelling, weakness, difficulty walking, and difficulty pushing off. How we treat: We provide Post Surgical Rehab or conservative rehab when appropriate, with a focus on safe loading, mobility, calf strengthening, gait retraining, and return-to-activity progression.
Plantar Fasciitis +
What it is: Irritation of the tissue along the bottom of the foot. Common causes: Running, prolonged standing, foot mechanics, tight calves, and sudden activity changes. Symptoms: Heel pain, arch pain, pain with first steps in the morning, and pain after standing. How we treat: We use stretching, foot and calf strengthening, gait analysis, Manual Physical Therapy, Soft Tissue/Myofascial Mobilization, and IASTM when appropriate.
Shin Splints +
What it is: Pain along the shin bone caused by repetitive stress. Common causes: Running, jumping, sudden training increases, poor footwear, and lower-leg weakness. Symptoms: Shin pain during or after exercise, tenderness, and discomfort with running or jumping. How we treat: We use load management, strengthening, gait retraining, mobility work, and return-to-running progression through Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.
Stress Fracture +
What it is: Small cracks in bone caused by repetitive overload. Common causes: Overtraining, sudden activity increases, poor recovery, and repetitive impact. Symptoms: Localized bone pain, swelling, tenderness, and pain that worsens with activity. Work-Related Foot and Ankle Pain +
